How To Prevent Bruising From Botox

How To Prevent Bruising From Botox

Want to know how to prevent bruising from botox injections? Our experts are here to help!

Almost every new aesthetics practitioner is scared of bruising their patients; it’s a common and rational fear.

Whilst understandable, it’s not something that should throw you off your stride. Bruising can happen, even to experienced injectors. What’s important is knowing how to minimise this risk.

Read on for our four top tips on preventing bruising from Harley Academy faculty members.

TOP TIPS FOR PREVENTING BRUISING FROM BOTOX

Be superficial with your injections

Dr Marcus Mehta, co-founder of STORY Clinics and Comma, aesthetic medicine expert and director at Harley Academy:

“When injecting around the eyes in particular, the key for me is to be really superficial. You want to be leaving visible bumps/blebs in the skin. Doing this and having really good light should help you to prevent bruising.”

Use Invisible needles

Natalie Haswell, cosmetic nurse prescriber, founder of Haswell Aesthetics Colchester, Allergan Institute board member and senior clinical trainer at Harley Academy:

“I always use TSK Invisible needles for toxin injections. These ensure better levels of patient comfort as well as a reduced risk of bruising.”

Assess for superficial vessels

Paula O’Sullivan, aesthetic nurse prescriber at her practice, Clinical Cosmetics Aesthetics in Woking, and clinical trainer at Harley Academy:

“Make the patient aware that when you inject, you’re assessing for superficial vessels. On occasion these vessels are not visible and this increases the risk of bruising. Whilst patient awareness and consent do not prevent bruising in themselves, they are vital in managing the situation.”

Provide appropriate advice to patients

Dr Harriet Jenkins, experienced aesthetics specialist at STORY Marylebone and Rachel Staggs Clinic, plus senior trainer and clinical lead at Harley Academy and The Academy Clinic:

“The role of patient communication, both before and after injectables appointments, shouldn’t be overlooked. Use pre- and post-appointment communications to set out key preparatory and aftercare information. These can be delivered verbally, via email, text or WhatsApp, for example. In relation to preventing bruising, remind your patients to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after their appointment. Additionally, note that they should not take ibuprofen or aspirin for 24 hours after having botox for the same reason.”

LEARNING TO PREVENT BRUISING FROM BOTOX IN PRACTICE

As with most things, practice is the best way to perfect your approach to botulinum toxin treatments. The more refined your technique, the better your chance of preventing bruising.

We offer licensed doctors, dentists, nurses and midwives a number of options when it comes to botox training. These are based on your level of competence in aesthetic medicine and cover both beginners and experienced aesthetic practitioners.

If you’re new to the specialism, start with our Foundation Training or Core Training in Botox and Dermal Fillers. These introductory, short injectables training courses will ground you in the basics.

For competent cosmetic injectors who are looking to formalize their training and get a more thorough understanding of aesthetic medicine, our Level 7 is the gold standard.

The next level, which is suitable for licensed aesthetics practitioners – both intermediate and more experienced – is our Ofqual-regulated Level 7 Diploma in Botox and Dermal Fillers. By taking this highly respected course you’ll experience expertly guided hands-on learning and one-to-one mentoring in every area of the cornerstone aesthetic treatments.

This is backed by outstanding theoretical training that spans:

– Facial anatomy

– Skin and facial ageing

– Injection techniques

– Product rheology

– Preventing and managing complications

– Ethics

– Patient care and more.

Our eLearning is self-paced so you can do it in your own time and fit it into your own schedule.

For more experienced injectors, looking for an aesthetics training course to help future-proof your career, we offer a Fast Track Level 7 option.
